Dr. Alvin C. Hathaway Sr. has been inspired by his parents and his family legacy to combine scholarship with service. “They taught (me) that education is your passport and that service is the rent you pay,” he said.
A Baltimore native, Hathaway was named pastor of the Union Baptist Church in 2007 after previously serving as their assistant pastor beginning in 2004. He earned a Ph.D. in philosophy of religion from the North Carolina College of Theology and a Doctor of Ministry degree from the United Theological Seminary.
He has a passion for modeling servant leadership and being a faith-based leader who advocates hope. “Servant leadership, as my biblical training teaches, is ‘the greatest among you will be the servant of others.’ ”
As chair of Act Now Baltimore, a network of faith-based community hubs in the city’s 14 districts designed to hold public officials accountable, he helped create and develop the prototype for pop-up, community-based vaccine clinics.
